The longest day of the year has now been and gone, with residents across Hertfordshire marking the occasion.

Throughout the UK, Brits welcomed yesterday's event (Wednesday, June 21), by watching either sunrise or sunset at picturesque locations.

A total of 16 hours and 38 minutes of sunlight were enjoyed on the day.

Summer Solstice itself - the point at which the sun is at its highest - took place at 3.57pm.

The Comet - along with its sister papers, The Welwyn Hatfield Times and The Herts Advertiser - asked residents across Hertfordshire to send us their pictures from the scenic event.

Paula Heyes replied to The Comet with an aesthetically pleasing image of the sun framed between plentiful trees and a thin cloud.

The ball of light cast an orange glow across an open field, in which Paula took the photograph.

Staying with The Comet, Ellie Males sent images of Hitchin Outdoor Pool's first ever Summer Solstice swim, which took place as the sun rose.

The scene was described as "beautiful".

Meanwhile, Karen Sheard sent an image to The Herts Advertiser of herself marshalling the St Albans Striders Summer Solstice 10k race.

The aim of the race is to beat the sunset.

Starting at 7pm, participants were asked to complete the race by 9.22pm, when sunset was expected.

From sport to leisure, Andrew McGuinness was next to send us an image, this time of The White Swan pub in St Albans city centre.

Lastly, Amy DE sent her Summer Solstice image to The Welwyn Hatfield Times.

Amy marked the occasion by horseriding through fields, and enjoying the green countryside that Hertfordshire has to offer.
