A 10-year-old boy has run 30km during February to raise money for a bone marrow cancer charity in memory of his beloved grandmother, who died in November.

Fynley Smith, who lives in Hitchin, has raised £1,359 for Myeloma UK in memory of Carole Smith.

"I ran 30km during the month of February to raise money for Myeloma UK in the memory of my nanny," explained Fynley, a pupil at Whitehill Junior School in Hitchin.

"Nanny was diagnosed with myeloma in March last year.

"She was a happy, fun and lively 83-year-old, who loved spending time with her family and going on holiday."

Carole, who was married and had three children, four grandchildren and one great grandchild, died on November 29 - eight-and-a-half months after diagnosis.

"By the time she was diagnosed, she was already feeling very poorly and unfortunately never felt herself again, despite treatment," Fynley explained.

"Nanny looked after everyone, and so when everyone had to start looking after her, she found it very hard.

"Because of the risk of Covid when Nanny was on chemotherapy, it was hard to spend time with her, but when we did, she always managed to smile and laugh and be Nanny.

"I know there are a lot of different cancers, each one as horrible and frightening as the next, but I want to try and make sure that anyone who is diagnosed with myeloma has the best chance of survival, or as long a life as possible when living with myeloma, and those who have family or friends diagnosed will have them with them for as long as possible."

Fynley's mum, Caroline, said: "We couldn't be more proud of Fynn. Bereavement is hard, but at the age of 10 it can be even harder to process and cope with. Fynn decided to turn a sad, sad situation into something positive and keep the memory of his nanny alive by raising money to help others and make something good happen from it all."
