I SIT glued to Desperate Housewives every week and see Felicity Huffman looking glamorous, fashionable and very Red Carpet.

When she first appeared as Bree, in Transamerica, I didn't recognise her. Her jaw seemed squarer, her voice was artificially low trying to be high and her gestures were studied to be ultra feminine.

Bree is days away from the surgery she longs for to finally make her a woman when a 17-year-old boy calls asking for his father Stanley.

Bree was once Stanley. He had a relationship with a young girl. Now he is forced to get his son Toby out of jail, and ferry him back to Los Angeles.

Toby (Kevin Zegers) takes drugs, sleeps with men for money and is out of control. But he is also damaged and basically rather an endearing lost boy.

The plotline is obvious and as old as the hills. As this unlikely couple drive across the States they confront the demons from their past and gradually stumble into a gentle, unconventional, accepting present.

Thanks to Cineworld, Stevenage.
