A brass band celebrating its 150th anniversary year has started on a positive note by welcoming a new musical director – whose work has appeared in Star Wars films.

Hitchin Band, formed in 1866, kicked off 2016 by appointing Graham Chambers, who was involved in a number of recording sessions for the series of popular films.

Graham, who played the trombone as a child, subsequently performed for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

After graduating with a degree in music from Surrey University he worked for a short time as a trombonist, and as a brass teacher.

He has also worked at the BBC as music editor for Radio Three, and toured the world with the London Symphony Orchestra, working with some of the world’s greatest conductors and soloists.

He said: “I’m looking forward to the 150th anniversary, and hope to help make it a really exciting year.”

Band secretary Mike Thorn, pictured above with Graham, added: “We’re looking forward to working with Graham to consolidate our position in the first section of the British Brass Band Championships as well as preparing for our anniversary events.”
