A RENOWNED poet and translator will be going back to school on Thursday for a home-coming reading.

George Szirtes will be returning to St Christopher School in Letchworth GC - where he used to teach - to read a selection of his work.

The former Hitchin resident, who came to Britain in 1956 after leaving Hungary as an eight-year-old refugee, was invited to perform at the school in Barrington Road by North Herts poety group Poetry ID.

John Gohorry, a member of Poetry ID, said: “It’s a very exciting prospect. George Szirtes has been published very widely, and has broadcast extensively on both radio and TV.

“He has received many prizes and honours, including the Gold Star of the Hungarian Republic, the Pro Cultura Hungarica medal, and the TS Eliot Prize. He’s a great speaker too. It’s sure to be a stimulating evening.”

The evening starts at 7.30pm, and tickets are price at 3.

They are available to buy from David’s Bookshop in Eastcheap, Letchworth GC or from Kim Simmonds-Hurn on 07548 039426.
