THE story of the immediate impact of the death of Diana on the British monarchy is brought to screen in this hypnotic production.

Although all the plaudits have gone to Helen Mirren - in a fascinating performance which thoroughly deserved an Oscar - the real star is director Stephen Frears, who avoided sensation and shot the film in short personal scenes.

Universally acclaimed and a hit at the box office, it would be amazing if The Queen was not a runaway success when it hits the shelves this week. 4/5
