THE Black Dahlia is based on the novel by the wonderful James Ellroy and is about the true story of the gruesome murder of a fledgling Hollywood starlet in 1947.
With an A-list cast including Josh Hartnett, Hilary Swank and Scarlet Johansson, and directed by the experienced hand of Brian de Palma, you would have thought that this had five stars written all over it.
However, when compared to Ellroy's other popular opus LA Confidential, Curtis Hanson's 1997 film is the clear winner. 3/5
