Ashwell is a lovely village – but you have to have a reason to go there.

And there’s no better reason to turn off the A505 and see what it has to offer than the annual Ashwell at Home event, which is coming up on Sunday, May 8.

There’s a packed programme of events being planned by the organisers, running from 11am to 5pm, which includes spinning and basket weaving craftspeople, music, food and entertainment.

There will be a range of free workshops for children and wonderful open gardens to enjoy – including a guided walk around Ashwell Bury, a garden designed by Gertrude Jeykll, which begins at 2.30pm.

No visit to Ashwell is complete without checking out the historic 14th century parish church, with its sombre connections to the Black Death, and there’s also the chance to see milking in progress during the afternoon at Bluegates Dairy.

Admission is £6 for adults but U18s get in free – visit www.ashwellathome.org.uk to find out more.
