TWO ideologies collide in a play which threatens the balance of world power.
Mother Courage and Her Children comes to the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage on Monday in a modern reworking of the anti-war play written in 1939.
The German dramatist Bertolt Brecht’s original has been translated by Lee Hall and asks fundamental questions about the effects our beliefs have on the world and the role of ideology in society and world affairs.
The production by Blackeyed Theatre centres on one woman (Janet Greaves) who, with her three children by her side, sees an opportunity to survive a conflict which spans a continent by selling goods to both sides.
And the time is about to come when, in her quest for material gain, Mother Courage must make the ultimate sacrifice.
The translation by Lee Hall, the man behind screenplays for Billy Ellliot, The Pitmen Painters and War Horse, brings the play into the 21st century with dark humour.
Joining Janet Greaves for the show are Jacob Addley, Georgina Hall, JJ Henry and Tristan Pate.
“Mother Courage is a powerful play to stage at a time when we are questioning our own culture of commerce and material gain,” said director Tom Neil.
“We’re taking an up-to-date, comic and energetic approach to it and our composer Ron McAllister has scored some beautiful new songs for us. Like all good drama, we’re aiming to create an entertaining mix of lightness and depth.”
Tickets for Mother Courage and Her Children, which stars at 7.45pm, range from �16 to �21.50 with �2 off for concessions or �3 for groups of 10 or more.
