Perhaps the thin air in Mark Linkous' isolated mountain hideaway has slowed progress on his return to the fray, some five years after his feted It's A Wonderful Life.

But judging by this blissfully wistful chunk of lo-fi folk, at times verging on the dreamlike, it seems more likely the altitude conferred an enchanting atmosphere on these 12 tracks.

Bar a couple of straightforward rockier numbers, Linkous' glacial work still retains a pop heart beating beneath sometimes wilfully opaque sounds, and is all the more intriguing for it.

A gentle, lingering drift under the skin of a gifted recluse. 4/5
