Easter is around the corner, and it’s not just about a long weekend dominated by a chocolate overload and a slice of Simnel cake.

And to highlight the key Christian celebration a one-man passion play is coming to Hitchin.

The drama re-enacts the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, performed by just one actor.

That one actor is Mark Topping, who will be staging his much-praised show Impossible God at Christchurch in Bedford Road on Friday night.

The 8pm performance is part of a nationwide tour of the play, in which Mark takes on the guise of a host of characters who relive their experience of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

He said: “It is a powerful exploration of events at the heart of Christianity.

“You are taken on a journey and challenged to look again at Jesus of Nazareth and reflect on what it might all mean.”

Mark has toured England, Wales and Ireland for the last five years playing Methodist preacher theologian John Wesley in two different productions, An Evening With John Wesley and My Own Familiar Friend.

He has also appeared as Wesley on TV shows including BBC’s Songs of Praise and Flog It!

Friday’s play is based on the devotional book An Impossible God which was written by Mark’s father, Methodist minister Frank Topping.

Tickets for Friday’s 7.30pm performance are £7, available from Sue Covington on 01462 452985 or suecov63@hotmail.co.uk.

Tickets will also be available on the door.
