THE cold, calculating world of a charming golddigger is the subject of a psychological thriller which hits a Stevenage stage next week.

Murder Mistaken, penned by acclaimed film, television and stage writer Janet Green, follows a young estate agent’s clerk who has married for money, and is prepared to commit murder to fulfil his monetary dreams.

The action takes place in the sitting room of Monica Bare’s house, just outside a small market town in 1950s Kent.

The outwardly respectable Edward Bare is married to Monica, a rich, doting wife many years his senior. However, while she may have married for love, his deepest feelings are reserved for his love of her money. But while Edward waits amicably for her to die to claim her money, he fears his inheritance is under threat when there is talk of changing her will. So deciding to take matters into his own hands, he decides to hasten her end and make it look like an accident.

However, Edward has misjudged the old woman and discovers an unpleasant surprise in her will. Undaunted, Edward decides to find himself another ‘sugar mummy’, and succeeds in marrying the wealthy widow of a hotel proprietor, Freda Jefferies.

However, his new wife has tight control of the purse strings, much to Edward’s frustration, so he faces another dilemma. Should he commit murder again and if so how can he ensure he gets what he really wants? So when another rich woman arrives on the scene, he has a decision to make and fast.

Will Freda be the next victim of his murderous tactics? Or will Edward’s past comeback to haunt him?
