A daredevil cyclist will be pedalling his way into Letchworth’s Broadway Cinema on Tuesday to talk about his attempt to break the human-powered land speed record.

Graeme Obree will be holding a question and answer session following a screening of the film Battle Mountain at 6pm, which follows the dogged Scottish cyclist’s quest from humble beginnings to challenging for world glory.

Jason Valentine, venues manager for the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, said: “I’m really pleased to have Graeme coming along to share his passion to build a bike that goes terrifyingly fast.

“The director, David Street, can also share his insights into this epic challenge.”

The 12A rated documentary follows Graeme’s rollercoaster career in the saddle, revealing insights into his determination and the unconventional design theories that led him to build bikes from items as diverse as saucepans and rollerblades – and become a multiple world record holder with a remarkable record in endurance road events.

The man they call the Flying Scotsman has always been a maverick who rarely fitted smoothly into the sporting establishment – he once joined a pro team in France but was sacked before he had ridden in a single race.

The film also features a contribution from Oympic gold medal legend Chris Hoy.
