An illustrator of children’s books is sharing her talents as part of a month-long residency at a community art gallery.
Jane Glynn has been exhibting her work at Dot to Dot gallery in Letchworth GC since the start of February and is holding a series of workshops aimed at youngsters and adults alike through to the end of the month.
Jane spent a decade teaching at St Christoper School in the town prior to leaving in 2012 to focus on art projects – making 366 handmade books, one for each day of the year.
Last year a similar idea saw the Datchworth resident create 365 pictures of faces, some of which are on display at the gallery in The Wynd.
Much of her work has been created in the nearby Fenners Building, where Jane is a fellow at the Digswell Arts Trust.
A children’s ‘clouds’ workshop with Jane was held at Dot to Dot gallery today (Thursday) with two sessions at 10am and 11am, before the artist hosts a Battenberg cake-themed tea party on Sunday.
The event, running from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, draws inspirations from Jane’s latest book entitled When I Was, which features an aunt who is drawn as a Battenberg cake.
About her latest work and the month-long residency, she said: “The picture book is nonsense rhyming for children but what’s unusual is it has four pages at the end for children to create their own rhymes.
“I’m very passionate about education and at Dot to Dot they do a lot of work involving the community so I’m really excited about helping people to create artwork. It’s about getting people to have a go and join in.”
The month ends with creativity and cocktails – where adults can make a small, spine bound book from start to finish with Jane’s help while enjoying some alcoholic refreshments. Complete with beautiful hand-marbled endpapers!
The evening runs from 7pm to 9pm and costs £15 to attend.
“We are very lucky to have Jane who is both a high level educator and an inspiring artist in her own right,” said Rebecca Leek, director of professional arts production company Rhapsode which runs the gallery.
“Her work is very rich but instantly appealing at the same time. She is perfect for Dot to Dot where we try to open up the arts to new audiences in imaginative ways.”
