THERE will probably be much written during the year on the Great War and 90th anniversary of Armistice Day in 1918.

This, as was said at the time, was the war to end all wars - but the end of World War I is quite extraordinary.

Writer Nicholas Best has looked at the events leading to the armistice from the generals' headquarters to trenches. He gives a vivid picture of the events leading up to the outbreak of peace and the last real battle involving the British Tommy when Mons was recaptured - the place, ironically, from where the Army retreated in 1914.
