Fyfe Dangerfield is the creative force that has propelled Guillemots' eccentrically-constructed indie-pop debut onto the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize.

Apart from having a great name, Fyfe also reveals a talent for heartfelt lyrics and sweeping, dreamy indie-pop landscapes.

Extensively pored over and fiddled with (one song even including a sampled dripping tap), that the 12 tracks here remain surprisingly cogent is testament to their robust melodic structures.

Made-up Lovesong #43 is a case in point, but the album is full of pop gems under a scattershot sheen of instruments and samples, brass toots and rhythmic shuffles. Beautiful and sometimes beguiling, Guillemots are unashamedly, engagingly individual. 4/5
