A HORROR comedy musical will have its world premire next week for a show where American comedy-drama Glee and Dracula combine.

The Stevenage Lytton Youth Theatre present Hammer High Go To The Finals: In Transylvania in a script written by a member of the Lytton Players.

Running nightly at the Lytton Theatre in Stevenage from Wednesday, September 12, to Saturday, September 15, the production will be performed by a 30-strong cast largely made up of eight to 18-year-olds from the youth group.

Centred on Hammer High Glee Club, the musical follows the trials and tribulations of the singing club as they end up performing in Transylvania instead of Prague, thanks to jealous cheerleaders and football star Jimmy.

There they find the Monster Club, complete with Dracula, Dr Frankenstein, Mummy, Wolfman and Igor, who need some entertainment for their meeting with the devil and his minions.

Director and writer Dave Slade spoke to Venue about how the musical came about.

“I’d wrote two productions on books by Lewis Caroll so after the shows I really wanted to do something original,” said Dave, who co-wrote the lyrics in the show with musical director Craig Harris.

“I had this weird idea we could combine Glee club with a horror slasher movie where everyone was to die at the end.

It was a bit dark so now its more of a black comedy with horror and Glee and it’s about taking the mickey out of all those things.”

Dave says the script has gone down well with the young cast, who began rehearsals in March, although insists there is something for everyone.

“They like the idea of the Glee club but there’s a lot of references to names of people in Universal and Hammer horror films which has gone over their heads completely,” he said.

“I’ve tried to put in jokes that mum and dad will get and I’ve explained it to the cast and they still don’t get them. Simply, it’s a horror comedy musical for all the family.”

Nightly performances of Hammer High Go To The Finals: In Transylvania start at 7.30pm at the theatre off Vardon Road.
