There will be sew much to admire in Letchworth on Saturday, when members of the North Herts & Beds branch of the Embroiderers Guild will be setting up shop in the café of David’s Bookshop as part of the organisation’s National Day of Stitch.

Branch chairman Gina Ferrari said: “We are taking part to raise awareness of who we are and what we do, and hopefully to attract more members. We feel that some people might be put off by the name Guild and believe you have to be an expert to join us, but we cater for all levels of stitcher, and for all types of stitch. The emphasis is definitely on fun and friendship.”

Members will be in the café from 10am, stitching small flower brooches and handing out kits.

The Guild is also behind an exhibition at Letchworth Arts Centre on Monday, looking at the calming influence of embroidery and needlework during two world wars. Calm During The Storm will run until August 28.

Also opening at the arts centre on Saturday is an Open Studios taster, also running until August 28, which will give a sneak preview of what local artists will be showcasing during the annual countywide art outreach event in September.

The taster exhibition is in the centre’s Café Gallery – opening times online at www.letchwortharts.org.
