THIS account of the life and times of American magician Charles Joseph Carter, who plied his trade across the USA in the early years of the 20th century, is a luxurious piece of historical fiction.

The story opens with the death of American President Warren G Harding soon after he had taken part in Carter's magnificent finale act Carter Beats the Devil, and soon the FBI start sniffing around Carter to find out what part, if any, he had in the President's death.

The novel then returns to the magician's childhood and follows him from those early card tricks to the sumptuous over-the-top stage shows which occupied his later career.
