Have you got what it takes to be a famous Hollywood femme fatale?

If you do, then The Bancroft Players in Hitchin want to hear from you.

Dawn French, Greta Scacchi and Susan Sarandon have all played Bette Davis, while Joan Crawford has been portrayed by actresses as diverse as Faye Dunaway, EastEnders’ Anita Dobson and Jessica Lange.

The Bancroft Players’ autumn production of Bette and Joan by Anton Burge is about to hold auditions.

Creatives at The Queen Mother Theatre need to find two actors to portray Bette Davis and Joan Crawford as they fight off-camera while filming ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’.

If you saw the recent TV adaptation of Feud by Glee and American Crime Story creator Ryan Murphy, then you’ll love Bette and Joan.

Many famous people have portrayed these leading ladies on the big screen, TV screen and on stage, including Faye Dunaway, Susan Sarandon, Dawn French and Anita Dobson, and this is your chance to shine in the spotlight.

Elliott Bunker, the director of the play in Hitchin, said: “Davis and Crawford lived and worked in a pre #MeToo world and used their talent and feminine whiles to get to the top of Hollywood, winning Oscars and millions of fans all along the way, but through it all they stayed sworn enemies.

“Baby Jane brought them together for the first and only time and this play allows for the fireworks to fly and the insecurities they each had to surface.

“As it only features the two characters, it’s a brilliant opportunity for two actors to represent these strong and formidable women.”

Auditions for this production are being held on Monday, July 9 and Wednesday, July 11 at The Queen Mother Theatre in Hitchin.

The QMT is on the edge of Woodside car park, off Walsworth Road.

Performances of Bette and Joan are in October and November.

Reading copies of the script are available directly from the theatre now.
