SMALL-town restaurant owner Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) becomes a hero when he shoots and kills two hoodlums. But soon after, Carl Fogaty (Ed Harris) arrives in town convinced that Tom is a violent gangster with debts. David Cronenberg's film can be seen as a thriller, but works best during its quieter moments. The film is seems somewhat more straightforward than many of Cronenberg's previous cinematic releases and Harris and Mortensen make a wonderful on-screen partnership. 4/5
