If your idea of an orchestral concert is of sombre and respectful contemplation of a composer’s mastery of the form, then perhaps it’s time you saw the Light.

The Hitchin Light Orchestra, that is, which according to proud leader Chris Pyne is a unique set-up which has achieved an astonishing amount over the 22 years it has been making music.

Key to that is a policy of “all ages, all instruments and all abilities” that welcomes all-comers and makes use of their talents and enthusiasm.

Chris said: “HLO is now bigger and better than it’s ever been and when we play at the Priory School next Tuesday there will be around 85 performers!”

The orchestra is appearing at the Bedford Road school while its usual Hitchin Town Hall home is out of commission.

“The Town Hall has been our venue of choice for years and I hope that when it emerges from the building work it will be improved and still suitable as a concert venue,” said Chris.

“Going to the Priory will help build links between us and the school, whose jazz band will play a few numbers. That may lead to interest in the orchestra from students and possibly doing some music workshops at the school.

“We also run string orchestra Funky Strings, saxophone ensemble Phat Sax, an acappella jazz choir, a rock song writing and recording class, a jazz improvisation workshop, and a clarinet choir.

“All activities are open to all and brilliant fun at the same time as making the very best music we can.”

Tickets for next Tuesday’s concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are £10 from 01462 431206.

Funky Strings and Phat Sax are both on the bill for a concert at the town’s Walsworth Road Baptist Church on Thursday, December 11, from 7pm. Tickets are the same price, call the same number.
