Ghostly goings-on are going bump in the night at Hitchin’s Market Theatre - and not just for Hallowe’en.

Spooky story The Maid is guaranteed to make return manifestations over the next few weeks.

It’s an atmospheric drama promising to be both harrowing and touching – as well as serving up a few bumps in the night.

It’s set 100 years ago, as the First World War rages. London actress Lucinda French, right, plays Edith Summers, the new chambermaid at the impressive Chorely Hall.

In the attic room of her new workplace she discovers a story of forbidden love condemned by class and status, compounded by the horrors of the conflict across the Channel.

Someone is desperate for her help and Edith is adamant that the lover’s story she has uncovered is resolved, whatever the consequences.

Author and artistic director Kirk Foster sais: “This time of the year has always provided the perfect opportunity to put on plays with a darker subject matter which work so well in the intimate atmosphere of our venue.

“There is something about being close to the action which really intensifies the feelings the audience get.

“If every audience member doesn’t jump at least once during this play we haven’t done our job right.”

The show is performed from Thursday to Saturday every week at the Sun Street venue – visit 01462 433553 or visit www.markettheatre.co.uk for full details.
