A revival of a thought-provoking musical provides a chance for the young members of the Stevenage Lytton Youth Theatre to step into the spotlight next week.

Hackback! was originally created by local writer Robert Hyman more than a decade ago, and there are strong links between that production and the show that goes on stage at the company’s Vardon Road theatre next Wednesday.

One of the original cast members, Sophie Ashby, now takes on the role of director – and with many of the more experienced members of the company away at uni, it’s a great opportunity for those who have been waiting in the wings.

Sophie said: “They have taken the challenge on board and have worked very hard on their acting, singing and dancing to create what is going to be a brilliant show.

“When we performed Hackback! in 2003 I played Ms Demeanour and Richard Absalom – who directed City Of Angels last year – played Dr Crow.

“These roles have now been taken by Ashley Clynes and Dan Byrne and they are both making them their own.”

The show is a cautionary tale for anyone who thinks computers are getting too powerful – here they are looking to take over the world, and it’s up to the humans to stop them – and it’s not just a message of pressing control, alt, delete.

The musical director is Derek Blyth, who is also directing the forthcoming production of Salad Days. Choreography is in the hands of Aaron Govey who also appears in the cast.

The show runs until Saturday night with performances at 7.30pm each evening.

Tickets are £8 with concessions available at £6 for all performances.
