Vibrant folk-rockers CC Smugglers will be back in Hitchin next weekend for another visit to Club 85, having sold out their last visit.

Feted as one of the best live acts in the country, the new roots six-piece gave a memorably storming show on the Rhythms of the World festival main stage back in 2015, and have since played a headline set at the Latitude Festival and opened for stars including Bruce Springsteen.

Based in North Herts and Beds, CC Smugglers had their song Rhythm make BBC Radio 2’s playlist – and now have their single Dirty Money out for stream and download.

Frontman Richie Prynne, who lives in Old Walden and went to Shefford’s Samuel Whitbread Academy, said the song reminded the band that happiness was about more than a balance sheet.

He said: “The song is about remembering that even though in today’s consumer-driven world, it’s easy to think that having enough money will make you happy.

“Happiness is a state of mind, not a collection of possessions or a certain number in your bank account.

“As touring musicians trying to make a name for ourselves this is very competitive and demanding industry, it is important to remember.

“Someone recently said to me: ‘Richie, why the hell are you writing songs like this, we badly need some more money.’

“My response is, yes a business needs capital, but if I really needed money, I would probably go and get a job that paid lots.

“Happiness goes way deeper than business capital and I think it’s good to remind ourselves. This song is us reminding ourselves.”

CC Smugglers have also played at Glastonbury and Bestival, among others. Their Dirty Money tour is set to take them across the UK, with the last stop in Inverness on November 11.

Touring alongside CC Smugglers are support act All Our Exes Live in Texas. The show starts at 8pm on Friday, October 20.

Tickets cost £10 in advance from seetickets, Bar 85 and all the regular Club 85 ticket outlets – namely Farleys, Jolly Brown, Gatefold, Bar 85, David’s Music in Letchworth and Unikorn in Stevenage.
