Singer-songwriter Kate Bush topped the UK charts as a teenager with classic debut single Wuthering Heights back in 1978.

Inspired by the Emily Brontë novel of the same name, the haunting track from the album The Kick Inside is very much Kate Bush’s signature song.

And a Kate Bush tribute show taking its name from that number one single – and Brontë’s famous book – is coming to Stevenage this week.

The Wuthering Heights – The Music of Kate Bush UK tour arrives at the Gordon Craig Theatre on Thursday, April 26.

The show captures not only the magic of Kate Bush’s work from albums such as debut The Kick Inside through to Aerial, it also faithfully tries to recreate the atmosphere and ethereal qualities which surround much of Kate’s stunning composition.

It features the exceptional vocals of Rachel Sinnetta, who is supported by a five-piece ensemble of multi-instrumentalists named The Rubber Band, another reference Kate Bush fans will appreciate.

Rachel Sinnetta is a singer/songwriter with an exceptional voice.

The Salisbury-born artist has worked with an illustrious array of talent, from Gerry & The Pacemakers whom she supported, Lianne Carroll, Pete Townshend and Chesney Hawkes to name a few.

It was meeting fellow ‘Pacemakers’ band mate Tony Young, band captain and keys, that was to prove pivotal.

The pair found themselves in a karaoke bar and, after a fair bit of wine, Rachel was encouraged to ‘’have a go”.

She selected a rather challenging track “for a drunk person”, she adds, and ended up singing Wow by Kate Bush, from Kate’s second studio album Lionheart.

She said: “I think everyone in the pub was brought to a deadly silence after because they were quite happy singing the usual pop songs and were not quite ready for Wow on a Friday/Saturday night.

“So that was the end of that and off we went for a takeaway.”

A few months later, when chatting with Tony, they recalled that drunken karaoke evening and suggested they put together a Kate Bush tribute ensemble.

Wuthering Heights - The Music of Kate Bush is the result.

Tony Young is the go-to musician for many an artist whose musicianship is celebrated by the likes of Billy J Kramer, Brian Poole, Wayne Fontana and Alisha’s Attic.

He admits to being a huge Kate Bush fan, so much so that as a lad, his bedroom walls were covered in her posters.

“There was nothing like her at the time,” said Tony.

“This strange, ethereal artist writing her own material appealed to me and has helped inform my own career.”

He added: “I cannot believe that only 18 months later we are about to embark on the Wuthering Heights’ tour, with such good pedigree in band members.

“I cannot think of another way to pay homage to someone who was such an influential role model, not just to me, but many other musicians.”

Sophie Young is another member of show.

She teaches, performs and also works as an examiner for Trinity Rock & Pop, travelling the world examining candidates performing contemporary music.

Sophie has been involved in the Rewind Festival with Right Said Fred and worked with a diverse range of artists, including Chip & Chesney Hawkes, Marc Almond and PJ Proby.

“I would be the first to admit I was never really a fan when she burst onto the scene,” said Sophie apologetically.

“I remember watching her on Top of the Pops thinking how strange she was waving her arms around and singing about Heathcliff, but that proved a key moment for me as it was just before I studied Wuthering Heights for A-level.”

On her travels to South Africa, as an examiner, Sophie spent a considerable time listening to Kate Bush and found a new respect for the artist.

“I became completely amazed and fascinated by the diversity and musical styling but also by the themes about which she writes.”

In the Wuthering Heights show, expect to hear Kate Bush tracks such as The Man With the Child In His Eyes, Babooshka and Running Up That Hill.

• Tickets for Wuthering Heights – The Music of Kate Bush at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage cost £26.
