MESH Theatre held dress rehearsals at the British Schools Museum in Hitchin, and at Wellington Barracks in London on Monday night.

The Herts-based company’s production of RC Sherriff’s 1928 play – which was last year turned into a film – is to be performed at Het Kruitmagazijn in Ypres from Wednesday, October 10, to Monday, November 12.

The play is based on the first-hand experiences of soldier-playwright Sherriff, who was wounded at the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917.

Director Sally Woodcock said: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime privilege to revive this classic play on the very soil which inspired it, where so many thousands of lives were lost, in this armistice centenary.

“Its characters strike chords with people, especially soldiers, because it was written by a soldier – so that authenticity is unmistakable.

“This year’s production promises to be something very special.”
