HITCHIN Folk Club has an impressive line-up of guests for February.

First up this Sunday are Steve Knightley and Jim Causley.

Steve Knightley is the songwriting force behind Show of Hands, widely acclaimed as one of the finest acoustic roots duo in England who have made three sellout Royal Albert Hall appearances.

The Exeter-based singer-songwriter writes the majority of material for the band, which also features multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer, and together they won the Best Live Act title in the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – the only category voted for by the public.

Knightley is touring with young Devon folk singer Causley, who became involved with traditional music from an early age via his family, the local folk scene and an historical tradition of wassailing in his home village of Whimple, East Devon.

He studied jazz and popular music at Exeter College, and then traditional music at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

He also became involved in the wider folk scene and began solo performances in folk clubs throughout the country.

The concert is now sold out, but call the club for any late ticket availability.

Club guests on February 13 will be Mike Silver and Johnny Coppin.

They first met in Cornwall in the early 70s, and began playing music together after a chance phone call in 2004.

Coppin has been described as having “one of the finest voices” by Q magazine, while Silver has been called a “hidden gem” by radio presenter Bob Harris.

PJ Wright and Brooks Williams visit the club on February 20.

Wright is guitarist with Little Johnny England, while blues Americana singer-songwriter Williams comes from Statesboro, Georgia, but now lives in Cambridge, and has 17 CDs to his credit.

On February 27 the guests will be Phil Beer and Miranda Sykes.

Beer is one of the most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music. A dazzling instrumentalist, he is perhaps best known as a top flight fiddler and plays in the all-star line-up, Feast of Fiddles.

Folk Roots magazine described Miranda as “...this ace double bass player and singer has worked with everyone that’s anyone on the acoustic scene...”

The club meets at the Sun Hotel, Sun Street, and doors open at 7.30pm.
