A MASTER storyteller will be holding a Turkish-themed evening which delves into the country’s history.

Letchworth Arts Centre hosts Behind Harem Walls – Life in the Ottoman Court on Friday, September 28.

The evening features Louise Reed who will be telling the story of Aimee Dubuc de la Rivery, starting with her capture by Algerian corsairs and continuing with details of her life in the Imperial Harem and her subsequent fate.

“I am interested in social history,” said Louise.

“I think that adding small, apparently insignificant details of a period of someone’s life lends colour to the talks I give. Talks are carefully researched – each one takes a year or more to prepare – and I try to make the finished product interesting without being ponderous.”

Married with three children, when not giving talks she teaches lipreading to deaf people and also enjoys creating and selling her clay or stone sculptures.

Louise is a member of British Actors Equity and recently gained diplomas in the History of Medicine and in the Philosophy of Medicine from the Society of Apothecaries.

Doors open at the venue in The Arcade at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Tickets are 15 or 13 for Arts Centre members, and include a Turkish buffet supper.
