HAVING garnered rave reviews from some live showcase gigs in London, San Francisco five-piece Film School look set to make quite a mark among the love-it-loud crowd.

But this ain't no music for meatheads. Messier and more layered than fellow Yanks The Secret Machines, Film School meander somewhere between post-rock's wall-of-sound workouts and prog-rock's twiddling guitar excursions, sometimes mixing the two into an almost overwhelmingly hypnotic soup. The band's Krayg (yes, really) Burton barely deserves the title 'singer', but his weary strains suit the School's swirling, disorienting miasma. A debut album to lose yourself in, with definite echoes of Floyd and alternative 80s acts, these guys are doubtless bowel-tremblingly devastating live. 4/5
