Steve Mason's old gang The Beta Band inhabited the sidelines of pop with their psychy, folky, electropop quirkiness through the late 90s and into the Noughties.

Striking out on his own, the fans of yore will no doubt be pleased to hear that Mason hasn't fallen far from the feted Beta tree.

Taking pinches of hip-hop and reggae and mixing with psychedelia and electronica, Mason's new project will appeal to the same semi-underground scene cool kids as his old outfit did, all spacey prettiness, samples and anti-Bush/Blair rhetoric realised through Mason's languid vocals and talent for spinning an engaging yarn as well as a niftily infectious tune. 3/5
