The Raconteurs, headed by Jack White and his talented-but-underexposed friend, Brendan Benson, have seized many an indie-lovers heart with ubiquitous and catchy debut single Steady, As She Goes. But many others here stand as equals.
A clutch of great blues-rock numbers are present, including the stomping White-led highlight, Level.
Its metronomic keyboard refrain hooks it all together and proves White can write for more than two instruments at a time.
But the sharp wit and radio-friendly touch of Benson's solo work is blunted here, leaving some solid but uninspiring tracks.
An interesting side project for the two, but they have both produced more compelling records individually. 3/5
