Although all the plaudits have gone to Helen Mirren - in a fascinating performance which thoroughly deserved an Oscar - the real star is director Stephen Frears, who avoided sensation and shot the film in short personal scenes.
Universally acclaimed and a hit at the box office, it would be amazing if The Queen was not a runaway success when it hits the shelves this week. 4/5
