Boro 3 Newcastle 1 full time
1 – Michael Bostwick hits the ball full whack into Kevin Nolan’s face, grounding the Toon captain who needs treatment but is soon ok.
5- Wayne Routledge passes out wide to Danny Simspn, unmarked. The full-back cross deep for Joey Barton whose shot is blocked for a corner.
8- Laird’s cross into the box is cleared to Bostwick whose low shot is blocked and the ball spins out for a corner. Long takes, Mark Roberts heads down but it hits the ground too hard and Tim Krul takes.
10- Routldege is given the ball wide right, with Laird in no man’s land. He crosses for Leon Best whose made a run to the near post, but his effort is blocked.
12- Barton tries his luck from long range, but he slices it out for a goal kick.
15- Nolan goes in late on Long and catches his ankle. Nolan gets a talking to, but nothing more. Two minutes later Alan Smith catches Long late near the dugouts and is booked.
The game seems to have lost some of earlier energy due to a number of enforced stoppages, including Mark Roberts going off with a bloodied nose. He’s back on now though.
20- Wilson runs past two in the centre of the park, and into the Geordie box but his shot is block.
23-Lovenkrands tries a shot at Day’s goal, but his effort is also blocked.
27- Best goes in with his arm on Laird, knocking the Boro left-back to the floor. Best is also booked.
32- The ball is played forward to Beardsley, who is beaten to it. The ball falls to Peter Winn, who passes across the Bostwick. One touch, one look up, one low and very hard shot. Krul gets one big hand on it for a corner. Terrific shot.
32- Mousinho pulls back Routledge and is booked.
36- Bostwick with a terrific challenge ahead of two Newcastle midfielders. The ball goes to Stacy Long who spins and turns past his marker to feed in Laird on the left. The full back runs into the box, beats his man and hits a low shot at Krul’s near post. The keeper gets a touch, it hits the post and it spins out for a corner.
Neither team is able to push on in the final ten minutes, and the game ebbs out for a 0-0 draw at the break.
47- Peter Winn booked for a late challenge.
50 – A move which starts at right back with Wilson taking on three players before putting the ball through the middle to Beardsley ends with Long cutting in from the left, and although it looked as though he had lost the ball he gets his foot behind it and a deflection off Williamson takes it past Krul for the opener. 1-0
51- From the kick off Newcastle go straight down the other end, and Nolan tries a curler from the edge of the box. Day dives and tips it over.
55- Coliccini collides with a Boro striker, and the ball spills to Bostwick who hits it low and hard. He tried it first half, and Krul pushed it wide. Not this time – what a strike! 2-0.
56- Henry has the ball and Beardsley, running behind the full-back, points to where he wants it and it’s put there on a coin. Bearsdley runs onto it and turns to go into the box only to be ruthlessly hacked down by Coloccini who is booked.
62- Tiote is beaten to the ball by Lawrie Wilson, who then runs into the box and crosses. His ball is deflected into the path of Winn, but his shot is deflected out for a corner from 16 yards.
63- Winn’s corner, and Beardsley heads it down. Too many bodies in the box, and it’s blocked.
71- Tiote is sent off for a lunge at Ashton who had run out of defence with the ball. Red card. Barton should also have seen red too for throwing the ball at the back of Long’s head.
76- Lovenkrands crosses deep from the left, and with a Newcastle striker off his shoulder Laird does well to head out for a corner.
79- Barton free kick is hit right under Day’s bar. The keeper tries to hold it, but under a challenge drops it but the ball is cleared.
80- Boro break, but Beardsley, who runs on to the ball for a snap-shot from 30, shoots wide.
82- Boro get the ball in the Newcastle box again but Wilson drag across goal is a foot or two in front of Beardsley.
86- Bridges is on for Ronnie Henry, and the first thing he does is get on the end of a Winn cross and tries to volley it home. It’s deflected out for a corner. Winn takes it, and Bridges is just millimetres from getting his head on it.
89- Barton plays a pass out wide to Airey, who cuts inside from 25 yards but he slices his effort out.
90+2 Joey Barton flicks a ball in to make it 2-1...but Peter Winn scores for Boro. A break by Mousinho, and he threads it throught to WInn who knocks it past Krul. Amazing scenes here,
