Stevenage turned in their ‘worst batting display’ of a largely underwhelming season in their 120-run loss against Chorleywood.

Having chosen to bowl first on a good track Stevenage backed themselves to chase any target that was set.

With the ball and in the field the team performed admirably in restricting Chorleywood to just 232 from 60 overs.

The bowling attack was led by Martin Nevill’s 19-5-32-0 and Rehan Hassan’s 20-0-63-2 and in the field Daniel Kilbey and Shadrach Gittens-Browne excelled to keep Chorleywood’s batsmen in check despite the lack of regular wickets.

With the run-rate below three an over for the majority of the innings the middle order batsmen had no option but to take risks and their job was made easier with Stevenage going down to 10 men for the last eight overs as Hassan went lame.

Harry Jerome (7-0-53-2) and Chris Whitworth (5-0-32-1) took responsibility for the late over bowling and although they leaked runs they also claimed valuable wickets.

In reply, as has been the trend of the year, Stevenage slumped to 10-2 with Hayward dismissed without scoring and Jerome following for eight.

Whitworth and Laurie Brown settled things down, but when Brown (14) turned a delivery into the hands of mid-wicket the innings never recovered.

Whitworth smashed a long-hop to deep-midwicket after looking untroubled in making 31, but apart from Michael Tyler’s 17 and a belligerent 14 from Nevill, no-one else made it into double figures leaving the hobbled Hassan (one not out) after coming out to bat at 11.
