The legendary Willie John McBride had the audience transfixed at the annual players' dinner and presentations at Letchworth Rugby Club.
Willie John, a former captain of the British Lions and ferocious forward for Ireland, talked about his illustrious playing career in front of more than 150 club members and guests at their Baldock Road clubhouse on Friday night.
The prestigious player of the year awards went to Phil Pearson (first team), Robin French (seconds) and Peter Bone (thirds).
Martin Kirby won the award for the most improved player, while Jimmy Tirrell collected the best young player award. Mark Ellis took the top points scorer award with 140.
The second XV ended the recent dominance of the first team by winning the team of the year award.
First team prop Nick Winwood received the Copper Brown Award and Gerry Thomas Tie for clubman of the year.
