The finals day of the North Herts Primary Schools' athletics competition was successful.

It was organised by North Herts District Council in partnership with Stevenage and North Herts AC.

Two months of training, and first round events at Hitchin Boys' School as well as Letchworth and district junior schools, led to a final event at Knights Templar School in Baldock.

The events involved running, jumping and throwing and used specialist equipment designed for these indoor events.

The running was in different combinations of relays plus an obstacle relay.

Field events, with two girls and two boys from each school in each event, involved standing long and triple jumps and speed bounce covering the jumps, chest push and javelin making up the throws, with a balance test completing the 10 events.

The winning girls' school was Pixmore with 84 points, well ahead of Codicote on 74 points. Wilbury and St Andrew's shared third place with 72 points, St Thomas More scored 63 and William Ransom 55.

In the boys' competition, Wilbury came out on top with 82 points, just ahead of St Andrew's who scored 80 points. They were one point clear of William Ransom's tally of 79 points. Codicote got 64 points, Pixmore 62 and St Thomas More 53.

The trophy for the overall team competition was presented by Norman Thompson, chairman of the North Herts Sports Council.

The winners were Wilbury School with 154 points, only two points clear of St Andrew's (152) with Pixmore finishing third with 146 points.

Trials will now be held for the best performers at these events to choose the eight girls and eight boys who will represent North Herts in the Herts Youth Games in May.

It is hoped that this successful format will be continued as part of the programme of the new sports partnership which comes on stream with Knights Templar in September.
