Letchworth turned in a great batting performance at Whitethorn Lane against St Margaretsbury only for the weather to have the final say.

Skipper Colin Letford won the toss and, with the weather looking ominous, opted to bat and get some points on the board in case the game did not finish.

Letford himself went cheaply, caught at slip off Brown, but then the rest of the top order looked in great form.

John Hilliard (64) and Richard Walsh (31) put on 85 for the second wicket, both timing the ball superbly, before both were bowled by Shanley.

Steve March and Ian Bowyer then added 47 before March was caught in the deep, also off Shanley, for 26.

Dave Albon then joined Bowyer in a fierce assault on the visitors' attack, sharing a stand of 74, 64 of which came off the last five overs.

Bowyer ended on 61no and Albon, who hit three huge sixes, 35no.

Shanley finished with 3-69 as the innings closed on 225-4 off 46 overs with each side losing seven overs due to stoppages.

Letchworth made a great start with Andy Newland grabbing two wickets in successive balls before the visitors' score reached double figures.

But this was their last success as St Margaretsbury moved to 44-2 off 17 overs before the heavens opened.

The only other Letchworth side to survive the weather was the fourth XI.

They were on the wrong end of a draw against Old Elizabethans 2nds, reaching 131-8 in reply to the visitors' 212-8 at Fairfield Park.

Ryan Jenkins took 5-46 and their best two batters were Matt Collison (42) and new Herts over-60s star Mike Fernando (32).

P Hitchin were washed out at St Albans on Saturday without a ball being bowled.

On Sunday, Hitchin were given the points in their first Chess Valley League game of the season by Clarendon.

The side from Watford had to concede the game due to a lot of their players attending the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to watch their local football side gain promotion to the Premiership.

This weekend sees Hitchin at home to Luton Town and Indians on Saturday and at home to Totteridge on Sunday.
