Stevenage Town recorded their fourth straight league win to keep up their challenge for promotion.

It was a convincing victory against a strong and competitive Imperial Medicals side from London.

The visitors started the game well and put Stags under constant pressure for the first 15 minutes, although their only reward was a penalty which was converted.

Stags at last took a grip on the game and impressive breaks from Michael Wilson and Gareth Lewis gave territorial position inside Medics' 22m area only for some strange refereeing decisions stopping them crossing the try line.

Iain Penny then rose high in the lineout to give Roberts quick ball off the top which led to a ruck under the posts.

The ball quickly moved down the backs and Ian Crompton skipped round his opponent to score. Lewis converted a superb kick from the touchline to give Stags a 7-3 lead.

Fly-half Wilson, with a pre-planned move, made space for full-back Greg Salisbury to burst into the line to break through the defensive line before off-loading to the supporting Lewis.

He was felled 10m short of the try line but the ball was quickly recycled to the alert Penny to dive over to score. Lewis converted the try.

Medics managed to reply almost immediately with a penalty.

This galvanised Stags into launching another backs move which went from their 22 to the other 22 before a Medics hand stopped a certain try.

The resultant scrum on the 22 in the middle of the pitch gave Stags all sorts of possibilities to attack.

With the forwards dominate in the scrum, Stags drove the scrum back 10m before number eight Gareth Roberts picked up and passed to Wilson.

He released the supporting Gary Trewartha in the tackle who drew his opponent to allow Roberts to dive over in the corner.

Again Lewis converted the kick from the touchline to give Stags a half-time lead of 15 points.

Stags started the new half brightly with their forwards in control and the backs continually causing Medics problems.

It took Stags 16 minutes before they scored again, with a scrum 10m out from Medics' 22.

Stags' dominant front row of Barry Cook, Tavita Faamausili and captain Neil Bamber won another strike against the head and with the ball spun wide quickly, Wilson passed to Lewis who crashed through several tackles to score close to the posts, Lewis converting his own try.

Within a few minutes, Medics showed their tenacity to get back in it by scoring a try which their fly-half converted.

The referee seemed to be the main attraction after that as the game disintegrated into infringement after infringement spoiling what was up to then a competitive game.

Stags crossed the try only once more when from a scrum five metres out, Roberts went to the blindside to cross in the corner. This time Lewis failed to convert.

P Datchworth went down to a 18-0 defeat at home to Vauxhall Motors in the same division.
