Ten of the best athletes from Stevenage and North Herts took part in combined events competitions at the traditional last meets of the track and field season.

Bunmi Awokoya closed her successful season in the Herts county championships at Eton with a second place in her first heptathlon competition.

She posted personal bests in four of the seven disciplines, and was well on the way to winning until she came to the javelin event. Like Britain's best at the moment, Kelly Sotherton, this proved to be her downfall!

Two personal bests (high jump 1.47m and 80m hurdles 12.56) were backed up by good performances in shot (9.79m) and 200m (25.75) followed by a best in the long jump of 4.84m - nearly a metre improvement - before the javelin (9.19m) and another best of 2:36.23 for the 800m. This led to a total of 3,875 points.

Nick Stoppard went one better on Sunday in the under-15 boys' event, winning with 2,668 points. His results were 80m hurdles (11.7) pb, shot (10.89m), long jump (5.47m), high jump (1.49m) and 800m (2:13.98).

Second claim member Moe Sasegbon, who trains at Ridlins Stadium with the club, won the under-15 girls' event on Saturday. Her high jump (1.51m), 75m hurdles (13.2) shot (7.79m), long jump (4.60m) and 800m (2:45.35) added up to 2,552 points.

Anne Rees collected the bronze medal in this age group - high jump (1.48m), 75m hurdles (12.8), shot (7.84m), long jump (4.38m) and 800m (2:55.84) - with 2,375 points.

Hannah Sweetman scored 1,831 points with personal bests in the shot (6.56m) and 800m (3:00.05).

Senior man Adam Searle enjoyed his weekend by posting eight season's bests, including some new disciplines, to finish first in the Herts championship and sixth overall in the open competition.

Under-20 man Sam Poulton joined in with eight season's bests as well to total 3,735 points for third place in the Herts event.

Chloe Vernon Hamilton swapped soccer for athletics at Peterborough on Sunday.

The under-15 girl, who was playing football for Leyton Orient on Saturday while her clubmates were at Eton, was third in this Eastern Counties pentathlon event. She had a personal best in the 75m hurdles (14.5), equal best time in the long jump (4.14m), posted 7.50m in the shot, high jumped 1.45m and won the 800m race in 2:38.5 to score a total of 2,269 points.

Her brother Billy (under-13) claimed a personal best shot distance with 7.61m before messing up his high jump event.

Under-13 girl Alex Gates produced a new personal best in the long jump (4.27m) - a fine distance for an 11-year-old - following this up with 29.5 for the 200m.

Also under-13, Jack Gates threw his javelin 16.48m and high jumped 1.18m.

Three Fairlands Valley Spartans had to turn left 50 times on Sunday as they were in Eton for the Combined Counties 10k track championships.

And the result after 25 laps was county championship medals for three Spartans.

First Spartan finisher was Jim Brown who won county gold in the male veteran (50 plus) category with a time of 40:52.

A second gold medal was won by Sharon Crowley in the female veteran (45 plus) category in 48:54.

Steve Smithson took county silver in the senior men's (20-39) category in 43:24.

Five Spartans took part in the final graded 1500m race of the season at the Watford track last Wednesday.

Graham Blackburn was first in the race in a season's best time of 4:59.51 while Smithson was third in 5:19.57.

Brown achieved what will probably be the tightest Spartans personal best all year. He improved by just 0.22 seconds to finish fifth in 5:24.38.

Marathon specialist Roger Biggs took more than three seconds off his first time set a fortnight earlier when he was ninth in 5:36.96. Paul Holgate was 10th in 6:1.35.

Mark Glading and Richard Sidlin ran their first marathons - and they went to Berlin to do it!

On a hot day, Glading finished 10,329th out of more than 40,000 runners in 3-59:21. Sidlin recently suffered a leg injury but still finished 18,517th in 4-41:06.

Also running were Roger Biggs (3-41:18), Michaela Norton-Lay (4-50:36) and Mark Sanders (5-15:49).

Simon Bell was in an RAF race at the weekend. He ran the hilly seven-mile event at RAF Bensom in 39:41.
