Potton United started their quest to go one better than the previous two seasons with a couple of away draws.

The Royals, runners-up in the UCL Premier Division in the last two years, drew 1-1 at Newport Pagnell on Tuesday night after an identical result away at Wellingborough in Saturday's opener.

Potton picked up their second point of the season with another draw in midweek but could consider themselves unlucky not to have picked up all three points.

Barry Sells placed a low shot past the home keeper from inside the area after 24 minutes and after that Potton had a number of chances yet failed to find the net.

Newport Pagnell equalised six minutes after the break when a ball across Brad Gillham in the Potton goal went in off the far post.

The hosts then had the better of posession but were reduced to 10 men midway through the half.

Potton failed to capitalise on the advantage of having an extra man on the pitch in the closing stages.

United had travelled to newly promoted Wellingborough for their first game of the season on Saturday.

Wellingborough should have taken the lead in the first half when a penalty was awarded after a trip by Paul Donnelly but Kevin Slinn blasted wide of the post.

Potton were reduced to 10 men on the stroke of half time when Dave Brown was sent off for a supposed stamp. Wellingborough took the lead after 73 minutes but Potton snatched a point with an equaliser in the last minute when an Andy Carter cross was headed home by Sells.

Potton travel to Felixstowe and Walton in the FA Cup extra preliminary round this Saturday and host local rivals St Neots in the league on Tuesday night.

* Biggleswade United kick off their league season with a first ever trip to North London side Edgware Town this Saturday.

They and their former Ryman League opposition are the only two clubs in SML Premier Division action with all others involved in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.

United ended their excellent pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory over an accomplished Stevenage Boro Academy side at Second Meadow on Saturday.

Robbie O'Dell gave the hosts the lead at the break, striking home a penalty after having been sent tumbling by a clumsy challenge by a Boro defender.

David Parker made it 2-0 with 10 minutes of the match remaining when he planted his free-kick in to the top of the net. Boro pulled one back in the dying seconds.

* Biggleswade Town - who are playing at Bedford Valerio United's ground at the start of the season - are at home to Clapton in the FA Cup this Saturday.

They are also travelling to St Margaretsbury on Tuesday night.
