The Comet Stevenage Sunday Football League round-up

THERE was 50 per cent success from the four teams in the Herts Sunday Junior Cup.

Bottles Res deservedly booked a visit to Highgate Redwing or Briery in the fourth round with an impressive first-half display.

Glen Day scored twice and a Rob Duckworth goal put them three-up at half-time. Complacency set in and West Watford Conservative Club forced their way back into the tie with two second-half goals.

That man Carl Thompson was on the mark with yet another hat-trick as Chequers saw off Europcar. They now go to Riverside AFC Seniors or Hemel Chesham Rangers on December 10.

MC Racing were beaten in the cruellest way possible. Tom Kelly's first-half goal was equalised by St Albans Royals to force extra-time, Kelly netted his second, but they looked to be heading out after two strikes against them.

However, right at the death, Kelly completed his hat-trick to force penalties. He scored again from the spot, as did Steve Teale and Richard O'Donovan, but after Steve Koop rattled the underside of the bar, Royals won it with their fifth perfect kick.

Ben Coles and Garyth Johnson netted for Rileys in their defeat to Berkhamsted Rangers.

In the KLM Challenge Cup, Broadhall took the lead through Bruce Bass before Glenn Cook pulled Stevenage Colts Old Boys level. Broadhall's Stan Matthews was sent-off for foul and abusive language towards the referee before the 10 men grabbed a meeting with Old Social this Sunday for a place in the last 16 as Paul Gasson despatched the penalty kick after a foul by keeper Kyal Currey with five minutes remaining.

Peartree set up a quarter-final meeting with Breachwood Lions in the Division One Cup after Paul Orchard doubled his tally for the club over the past three seasons.

His hat-trick was matched by James Khakpour-Smith, one of whose strikes was a superb turn and volley from 15 yards. Ross Jackson had scored the opener in the first minute. The SCS replies came from Hayden McColm and Ashley Reynolds.

In the Premier Division, a goal in each half saw Bottles beat Hermit of Redcoats. Lee Horsley struck the first before Dean McCullagh added another from the spot.

Luke Garwood claimed the only goal for Station as Chris Simpson's shot deflected off his knee and flew in against Bedwell Athletic. It was the second week running they had won by a solitary goal to remain fifth.

Nirankari Sports Sabha (including a Rory Spencer hat-trick) stayed 100 per cent after a blistering first-half showing against Old Red Lion who replied through Tom Hillard (two) and a rare strike from Damian Rushton.

Dun Cow endured their fifth defeat in eight league games as their rebuilding goes on, Adam Furness netting their goal.

Mallard took the lead through Craig Reynolds' 25-yard free-kick. Tom Henry struck a fierce 25-yard strike into the bottom corner and Adam Hazelton rose to nod home Perry Phillips' corner to complete the scoring as the lads enjoyed their victory back at the sponsors' premises until late in the evening.

In Division One, Pin Green ended Aston Athletic's brief recovery, Richard Griffiths striking twice from long range with swerving shots into the top left corner as part of four goals for him. Steve Soards hit a brace, including a terrific drive into the bottom corner from 30 yards.

Steve Ryan bagged a volley into the roof of the net, Gary Chambers turned in a Griffiths cross at the far post and Paul Parker knocked home a rebound from a saved Sean Soards free-kick.

Probuild kept up the chase with a comfortable win over Coopers. However, there was nothing between the teams in the first half-hour until the ball broke, and in five quick passes, Gary Pomfret put the ball in the net after an excellent counter attack.

Pomfret grabbed his second just before the break. A long ball saw Dave Clements grab number three, before Stu MacKenzie with a back-heel from a corner scramble. The fifth was the best, Lee Gribben hitting an absolute cracking 30-yarder.

Hogshead leapfrogged their victims into third place as Brendan Moulton (two), Calvert Garnes and a bullet header from Lee Dowsett saw off Breachwood Lions (Ian Canning).

Division Two leaders FC Rising Sun kept up their 100 per cent record despite an excellent comeback.

A cross from the right found Luke Mitchell at the far post for the opener before the scorer's cross found Andrew Davis to prod home. Tom Bowgett and Pete Brewster netted to claw Newcotech level just before the break.

John Hughes' shot was saved well, Lee Kitching followed up to net to put them back in front. Riyston Williams then burst through the defence to slot home before squaring for Kitching to net his second.

Second-placed Emperors Head's poor run continued.

Nicky Swaine scored an own goal to put them in front, but after George Rowe was brought down in the area, Carl Fletcher scored from spot to pull ProCladd level. Late on, Charlie Barnett turned the game on its head as he scored a truly memorable goal from well outside the area to win it.

Third-placed Old Social also lost - they had two men sent-off in the final minutes. Granby St George took the lead as Martin Metcalf's free-kick took a deflection.

Gary Brown netted with a header for the winner, but they had Matt Stanton in goal to thank for preserving the win, despite Martin Matthews' consolation.

A fine finish from Callum Gardiner gave Crooked Billet the lead. Norwich Union equalised when an excellent Greg Collins corner was headed home by the impressive James Dillnutt.

Triage took the lead just after half-time following a long ball over the defence which was slotted home with ease by Lori Fekete. However, two goals in as many minutes turned the game in King Pin United's favour as firstly, a crossfield pass from James Wyatt was controlled on the run by Carl Lingwood, who struck home from the edge of the box.

Wyatt then turned goalscorer as he pounced on a Danny Lingwood shot that was fumbled by the keeper and they secured all three points with Wyatt's second as he poked the ball through a crowd of players from the edge of the box.

White Horse closed the gap on Bottles Res at the top of Division Three. Jason Lovelock (hat-trick), Frazer Triggs (hat-trick) and Jason Butler netted against Twin Foxes (Paul Jones two, Rob Barnes and Lee Duffy) in an 11-goal thriller.

North Herts Celtic took an early lead through Paul Cockburn before AFC Stevenage captain Adam Payne scored his first goal for the club with a powerful shot off the underside of the bar. Cockburn scored again before Terry Lock levelled by half-time with a lob. With 20 minutes left, Celtic grabbed the winner through Leigh Pollard.

A Kevin Ward hat-trick and a brace from Rob Lucas saw Fox jump two places into third by beating basement boys Athletico Timebridge (Matt Grima and Dave Wenn).

Jon London inspired Rapidsource to all three points in the Invitation Cup thanks to Dalziel Geary (two) and Scott Nugent. MBDA Res had levelled the tie in the second-half from the spot courtesy of Steve Stapleton's 10th goal of the season.
