Stevenage beat Morecambe in a hard-fought SkyBet League Two match at the Lamex on Saturday after a fairytale debut from on loan Scunthorpe United striker Kyle Wootton.

The 20-year-old who signed for Boro before the transfer window slammed shut helped clinch three much-needed – and well-deserved – points.

A goal from Matty Godden, only his second of the season, put Boro 1-0 ahead on 26 minutes before Steven Old equalised for the visitors ten minutes before the break.

However there was a dream debut in store for Wootton after he scored the winner a minute after coming on as sub for Danny Newton in the 64th minute.

Wotton speaking after the match said: “It’s a great win. It was very tight, but we held them off.

“My debut couldn’t have gone much better. I think I touched the ball out wide as soon as I got on but with my second touch I got the goal which was a great way to get off the mark.

“The main thing is that the team got three points. It was a big three points for us and it was a good team performance.

Wootton who has been on loan to Lincoln City, North Ferriby United and Cheltenham Town before coming to the Lamex added: “There’s a great bunch of lads here and they’ve all made me feel welcome and I’ve fitted in well.

“It’s been hard because I’ve been out injured for six weeks but I’ve come back and I’ve been working hard to get into the team.

“It was good to get 20/25 minutes under my belt [on Saturday]. It felt good, I feel fit and I’m raring to go.

“There’s a good squad here, a great set of strikers and when everyone scores goals it puts pressure on others which is good for the team at the end of the day which is the most important thing.

“I only started training this week to gradually build it up. I only started full training before the game but I’ve been working hard.

“It’s been a long six weeks but it’s been definitely worth it to be part of the club.”

The welcome win saw Boro stem a run of one point from three matches prior to Saturday and Wotton was bullish about the future, saying: “If the manager calls upon me I’m sure I’ll be ready no matter what – I’ll be ready to go [and do a job for Stevenage]. If I can get another goal, or two or three that’s the most important thing.”
