Stevenage captain Scott Cuthbert has been speaking after Boro’s 2-0 victory over Grimsby. Read on for what he said about the match.

Stevenage beat Grimsby Town 2-0 at Blundell Park in their League Two clash on Saturday.

A Kurtis Guthrie brace sealed the points for Dino Maamria’s Boro after another excellent performance from QPR loanee Ilias Chair in front of 3,689 fans including 112 from North Herts.

The result gave Maamria’s Boro a boost after they travelled to Cleethorpes looking to bounce back after their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Notts County

One of the features of the match was captain Cuthbert marshalling the backline superbly well alongside another excellent performance from Luther James Wildin at right-back as well as Ben Nugent and Terence Vancooten.

Speaking after the match the former Celtic academy graduate hailed his team-mates across the park saying: “I thought we played well. It’s always a tough place to come.

“It was a fantastic goal from ‘Kurt’ [Kurtis Guthrie] and ‘Farms’ [Paul Farman] made a fantastic save when he had to.

“We’ve talked a lot about playing out from the back and giving the midfield more opportunities to get on the ball. We know we’ve got players who know this league.

“We’ve also got good young players and if we can feed people like ‘Kurt’, Ilias [Chair] and Moses [Makasi] – who I thought was outstanding – then we’ve got a chance.

“’Kurt’ can at times frustrate you and at times blow you away. That’s why it’s important as a group to get the best out of each other because we’re not a big squad.

“’Revs’ is a massive loss for us and we need people like ‘Kurt’ to step up which he has certainly done. It was a fantastic team goal for his first and a fantastic goal in the second half to kill the game off.

“Terence has had a bit of a frustrating season. He’s been in and out and probably not played as many games as he would have liked.

“So it’s important for him to end the season well. He wants to kick on and the next five games give him an opportunity to kick on because he was absolutely outstanding.”

Boro’s victory made amends for the disappointment of the 3-0 defeat to Notts County at the Lamex seven days ago after their performance in Cleethorpes.

Cuthbert admitted he and his colleagues were desperate to make amends against a Grimsby side who have been strong at Blundell Park this term.

The former promotion-winning Luton captain explained: “The gaffer said before the game they’ve got a good home record and I think they’ve won half their games at Blundell Park this season so we knew it would be a difficult game.

“I thought we went about it in the right way. We tried to get on the ball early on. We started the game really well on the front foot.

“We saw the game out and got the result we really wanted after the disappointment of losing at home to Notts County last week.

“No one was happy losing in the manner we did so to come up here and get a clean sheet and the three points was a good response.”

With the victory boosting 12th place Boro to within five points of the final play-off spot ahead of the home match against Carlisle on Saturday could a spot in the top seven still be a realistic aim for Maamria’s men.

Cuthbert replied: “You never know. We’ve just got to take each game as it comes. I think as a group we were perhaps getting ahead of ourselves when we were doing well. Let’s just take each game as it comes and see where it gets us.

“We’ve got Carlisle at home next week and it’s a chance for us to jump them. If we do that we’ll look at the table and assess it from there.

“Five games to go. Let’s not look back. We had a good week in training and we need to keep building on that and build on the performance we gave against Grimsby and finish the season strong.”
