THE John Henry Newman School in Stevenage is celebrating its most successful sporting season ever.

There has been some spectacular performances from its netball, swimming, rugby and football teams plus a badminton ace.

- Their Year Seven and Eight netball teams proved to be unstoppable with both winning the North Herts and Stevenage leagues.

The Year Eight girls, who won both the league and North Herts tournament convincingly, have made sporting history at the school with their record of never being beaten in the two years they have played together.

They will be entering the national competition in September.

- The senior boys maintained their domination of the North Herts schools' district swimming gala.

They collectively won the senior category and set a new championship record for the freestyle relay.

Their individual winners were Andrew Curtin (50m backstroke), Matt Port (25m butterfly) and Chris Crome (50m freestyle), while Daniel Shaw (50m breaststroke) was third.

- Four of their rugby sides had a successful season, with Year Seven top of the class by scoring 187 unanswered points (beating Priory 101-0 and Collenswood 76-0).

The Year Eights defeated Knights Templar 29-0, Marriotts 52-0, Heathcote 64-7 and Collenswood 19-7.

Year 10 beat Marriotts 19-0, Thomas Alleyne 71-7 and Collenswood 76-0, while the seniors overcame Thomas Alleyne 32-5 and Heathcote 49-5.

- The footballing girls have gone from strength to strength this season and were runners-up in the county cup final.

This earned them entry into the national competition and they beat the Bucks champions 5-3 before losing 6-3 to Cardinal Newman School in the last 32.

The Year Eight boys retained the district cup after beating Knights Templar 3-1 following extra time.

They had beaten Priory 8-1, Highfield 10-0 and Barnwell 3-2 (aet) to reach the final.

- Year 10 student Ben Vranjkovic represented the school in the Herts schools' badmintion county championships.

He was the runner-up in the singles' competition and also achieved second place overall in the mixed doubles event. Ben will be representing Herts in the under-17 category next season.
