Rugby round-up

STEVENAGE Town were left to carry the torch for Comet country clubs in the Herts Presidents' Cup.

A late Michael Wilson try earned a dramatic 17-15 win over local rivals Welwyn in Sunday's first round tie at North Road.

Stags have now been drawn at home again to old league rivals Tring in the last eight.

The quarter-final tie is on Sunday, February 5.

The home side gained partial revenge for two league defeats by Welwyn in dramatic fashion.

They scored three tries, whereas Welwyn kicked five penalties to stay in contention.

The boot was on the other foot for Welwyn this time, who were conquerors of Letchworth in the preliminary round due to a last-gasp penalty.

Hitchin and Datchworth were both comfortably beaten by National League clubs in their first round matches.

The Hedgehogs, Herts Presidents' Trophy winners in 2005, went down 55-12 at Tabard and Datchworth put up a brave fight in losing 29-11 at home to Hertford.

Datchworth's points came via Richie Howells' two penalties and a try from left winger James Watt.

Full quarter-final draw: Fullerians v Tabard, Harpenden v Hertford, St Albans v Bishop's Stortford, Stevenage v Tring.
