A nailbiting finish saw Codicote Primary School take the trophy at the North Hertfordshire Tag Rugby Festival last Wednesday.

They managed to beat off a strong challenge from Lordship Farm School in Letchworth GC with a final score of 10-7.

The festival attracted 19 schools to the event at Hitchin Rugby Club.

Referees were provided by North Hertfordshire College and each game was started by Hitchin's John Drew.

The festival was run by North Herts District Council in partnership with Hitchin Rugby Club.

- They started training a week before the boys and finished a month after them but at last the rugby season is finally over for Letchworth's under-17 girls.

They ended on a big stage, the RFUW's national sevens tournament held for the second season at Harpenden.

Twenty teams from as far afield as Exeter, Worcester, Darlington and Morpeth were competing in this annual showcase of English girls' rugby.

The Letchworth girls, in only their second season, were one of the newest teams taking part but were not overawed by the experience.

Fighting back from an early defeat to Herts Sevens champions Basildon, Letchworth overcame an Andover side packed with Hampshire county players 17-5 to reach a plate semi against top Dorset side Wimborne.

In a game that featured every kind of weather in the space of 15 minutes, the more experienced and well-drilled team from the south west were always on top.

A break from Hayley Guilder in the first half came inches short of pulling Letchworth back on terms but eventually Wimborne came out deserved winners.

The girls now have a summer break before training for the new season begins at the end of August.
