Handling errors and poor decision making as Hitchin lose 15-8
Hitchin 8 Haringey 15
Hitchin returned to action on Saturday following a prolonged Christmas break but despite having the better percentage of possession and territory poor decision making and basic handling errors cost them the win.
Playing against the wind in the first half Hitchin’s defensive line stood strong and did well to repel a number of Haringey drives in the first 30 minutes of the game.
The forwards were dominant in the set piece and at the break down allowed the visitors very little time to settle on the ball.
Perhaps the signs were beginning to show that it was not going to be Hitchin’s day when two first half incidents.
Firstly, superbly weighted cross field kick from fly half Jack Peachey saw winger James Larman climb high above the defence to touch the ball down, only to have the try disallowed for a knock-on.
Then a break through the midfield saw Jesse Gerrard feed the ball to Chris Betts and with Stevie Merritt in close support and one man to beat the try looked on, only for the pass to be adjudged forward and play was brought back.
With the first half coming to an end a rare scrummage win by the visitors saw them crash the ball over the Hitchin line to put them five up at the break.
The majority of the second half was played in the Haringey half as the wind helped clear the ball whenever the Hitchin line was under threat, however bad handling and poor decision making destroyed most of the Hitchin attacking play
Fifteen minutes into the half Hitchin were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, which was duly converted by Peachey.
Five minutes later the same player broke the line with a delicate chip through and chasing his own kick Peachey won the foot race to put Hitchin ahead.
The hosts continued to be dominant at the breakdown area with Simon Banner a continual thorn in the Haringey side.
As the half moved in to the final stages Hitchin paid the price for two lapses in concentration with each mistake resulting in unconverted tries for the visitors.
Neither of the tries was glamorous but they proved enough to shut Hitchin out of the game and for the visitors to take the league points on offer.
