Hitchin Ladies First XV are just one win away from an unbeaten league season after thrashing Hampstead 63-12 on Sunday afternoon.
Sophie Tyler got five of the Hedgehogs 11 tries in a superb performance from the outside centre, while Casey Burgess and skipper Emma Cramphorn also scored two apiece.
Jade Cooper and Jess Eden rounding off the scoring for the away side who put on a brilliant display of fast flowing, powerful rugby as the move one step closer to finishing the Women’s NC South-East North 2 division with a 100 per cent record.
Hitchin made a fast start to the game and scored the opening try in the first few minutes. Tyler crossed under the post before Katie Allerton kicked the conversion for 7-0.
The away side were in complete control, with Burgess next to score making it 12-0 inside 10 minutes.
It was cruise control for the unbeaten Hedgehogs, with Hampstead barely seeing any of the ball. Captain Cramphorn then crossed over followed by Tyler’s second of the afternoon to make it 22-0.
As spitting rain made way to sunshine just before half-time, the home side had a bright spell of their own. They even managed to get on the score sheet, crossing over and kicking the conversion for 22-7 after a sustained spell of pressure.
The weather continued to change drastically as the hail started to fall and the wind began to swirl after the break, but the course of the game remained the same.
Hitchin extended their lead when Tyler got her third try and Allerton kicked the conversion to make it 29-7, with Cooper crossing not long after for 34-7.
Tyler was having an afternoon to remember in North London, showing quick feet and using a wonderful dummy pass to get her fourth, extending the Hedgehogs lead to 41-7 after Allerton kicked another conversion.
Hampstead to their credit kept going, and cut the lead to 41-12 after intercepting a Hitchin pass on the halfway line to break away and score.
Undeterred, the Hedgehogs continued to push forward, showing why they have been unstoppable this season as Burgess drove over to make it 46-12.
Tyler continued her superb performance with a fifth try before Allerton kicked the conversion for 53-12.
Hitchin were well in control and enjoying themselves, with Cramphorn powering over for the next try to make it 58-12.
With the last action of the game, Eden crossed over in the corner to round off the scoring and secure a resounding 63-12 win.
The win stretches the Hedgehogs unbeaten run to 13 league games ahead of their final fixture against Haringey Ladies at Hitchin Rugby Club next Sunday.
Coach Dale Baines was delighted with the performance against Hampstead and is hopeful that his side can finish the season unbeaten.
“Everything clicked, we ran all of our patterns of play at pace in harsh conditions to a fantastic level,” he said.
“Hopefully with a large home crowd at the weekend we can show everyone the improvement we’ve made as a team and hopefully a victory will complete the perfect season.”
