Louise Shortland has improved on her own pole vault club record for the third time this summer.

The Stevenage and North Herts athlete was competing for Hertfordshire in the Inter Counties Championships at Bedford and she cleared 3.60m for sixth in the event.

This performance puts her at equal 14th in the national all-time ranking list of under-20 women.

Brother and sister Shelley and Neil McLellan both competed in this match for Hertfordshire.

Shelley followed up her recent success at the county championships with a superb bronze in the shot putt.

Her throw of 12.36m in the third round was enough to secure third place. It was Shelley's first major outdoor medal following her bronze at the South of England indoor championships earlier this year.

Older brother Neil's best javelin throw of 68.96m was good enough to give him fifth place in difficult throwing conditions.

Other club members competing for Hertfordshire were Emma Kemp (400m heats, 57.22), Wendy Meadows Smith (high jump, 1.60m) and Aaron Hull (javelin, 38.30m).

The other meeting where club members took part was the Southern Counties under-15 and under-17 championships at Chelmsford.

Highest placed was under-15 Anne Rees, clearing 2.40m in heavy rain in her pole vault event for third, then 1.45m in the high jump to be placed sixth.

Bunmi Awokoya and Joanne Mansell, in the under-17 age group, collected three fifth places between them.

Bunmi ran a personal best of 26.42 in the 200m heats and followed this up with another best in the final, clocking 26.20 for fifth place.

Joanne also delivered a personal best in her heat of the 800m on Saturday with a time of 2:16.4.

Her final on Sunday was run in a blustery wind where she clocked 2:17.80 for her fifth place.

Bunmi was also fifth in the shot with another personal best of 10.04m.

Justine Simpson, in her heat of the 80m hurdles, was flying when she had a bad knock at the seventh hurdle, slowing her to 12.34 and just missing qualifying for the final.

In 400m races, under-15 Nick Stoppard clocked 56.56 and under-17 Josh Saydraouten 54.34 but neither made the final in their categories.
